Travel guitars are available for less than 100 euros as acoustic guitars with steel strings (e.g. Harley Benton GS-Travel Mahogany) and alternatively with pickups (e.g. Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany). Guitar sets complete with gig bag and tuner can also be found in this category (e.g. Harley Benton Delta Blues T Set 1). Furthermore, electric guitar players can choose from a range of Travel Electric Guitars at Thomann, available from as little as 150 euros and featuring a total length of 82cm and an ultra-compact body (Höfner Shorty Electric Guitar). Headless designs are even shorter, measuring just over 70cm long (e.g. Traveler Guitar Electric Ultra Light Black or Traveler Guitar Speedster Deluxe Carrera Gray). Electro-acoustic travel guitars with steel or nylon strings are also available in this size and feature a piezo pickup for connection to an amplifier or PA system (e.g. Traveler Guitars Escape MK-III Steel Mahagony or Traveler Guitar Ultra-Light Nylon-Mahogany). Additionally, designs with a removable neck, such as those offered by Furch (e.g. the Furch LJ-10), are highly compact for maximum portability.
Acoustic travel guitars Acoustic travel guitars often have a shorter scale length than standard acoustic guitars. The scale length – the vibrating string length between the nut and the bridge – typically measures between 630 and 650mm on full-sized acoustic guitars. Many travel guitars have a scale length of less than 600mm and, therefore, a slightly shorter neck. These guitars are tuned in exactly the same way as all others but have narrower spacing between the frets. Acoustic travel guitars with a shorter scale length and shorter body are often called 3/4 guitars.
Electric travel guitars are typically constructed to a standard scale length for electric guitars of between 628 and 648mm and largely owe their compact design to their smaller body size. For example, guitar bodies from Höfner (Shorty) are just large enough to accommodate the pickup, bridge, and potentiometers. The company Traveler Guitar takes this a step further with its headless designs, where the tuning mechanisms are integrated into the body, and the addition of fold-out arm and leg supports ensures an authentic playing experience while seated. Electric basses are also manufactured according to this principle (e.g. Traveler Guitar TB-4P Bass).
Thomann also offers a wide range of electro-acoustic travel guitars from Traveler Guitars, which are remarkably similar in appearance to their electric counterparts, but come with thicker steel or nylon strings. Instead of a magnetic pickup, electro-acoustic guitars are fitted with a piezo pickup, delivering the unmistakable sound of an amplified acoustic sound. Electro-acoustic travel guitars are particularly suitable for use with an acoustic guitar amplifier, PA system, or recording interface.
